چکیده

We use the GEANT4 Monte Carlo framework to calculate the γ-ray albedo of the Moon due to interactions of cosmic ray (CR) nuclei with moon rock. Our calculation of the albedo spectrum agrees with the EGRET data. We show that the spectrum of γ-rays from the Moon is very steep with an effective cutoff around 4 GeV (600 MeV for the inner part of the Moon disc). Apart from other astrophysical sources, the albedo spectrum of the Moon is well understood, including its absolute normalisation; this makes it a useful “standard candle” for γ-ray telescopes, such as the forthcoming Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST). The albedo flux depends on the incident CR spectrum which changes over the solar cycle. Therefore, it is possible to monitor the CR spectrum using the albedo γ-ray flux. Simultaneous measurements of CR proton and helium spectra by the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA), and observations of the albedo γ-rays by the GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT), can be used to test the model predictions and will enable the GLAST LAT to monitor the CR spectrum near the Earth beyond the lifetime of PAMELA.

The Gamma-ray Albedo of the Moon

We use the GEANT4 Monte Carlo framework to calculate the γ-ray albedo of the Moon due to interactions of cosmic ray (CR) nuclei with moon rock. Our calculation of the albedo spectrum agrees with the EGRET data. We show that the spectrum of γ-rays from the Moon is very steep with an effective cutoff around 3–4 GeV (600 MeV for the inner part of the Moon disk) and exhibits a narrow pion-decay lin...

Giant Flares as Mini Gamma Ray Bursts

On December 27, 2004, practically all gamma-ray satellites were saturated by a giant flare from SGR1806−20 (Borkowski et al. 2004; Hurley et al. 2004; Mazets et al. 2004). This giant flare was strong enough to affect our ionosphere (Campbell et al. 2005) and for its reflection from the moon to be detected (Golenetskii et al. 2004). It was followed by an extremely bright radio afterglow, with an...

Earth X-ray albedo for CXB radiation in the 1-1000 keV band

We present calculations of the Cosmic X-ray background (CXB) reflection by the Earth atmosphere in the 1-1000 keV range and compare it with the reflection by the Moon and the Sun. The calculations use realistic chemical composition of the Earth atmosphere and include all relevant physical processes. An analytic approximation to the Earth X-ray albedo is provided, which should be accurate down t...

Simulation of gamma-ray gamma rays by composite shields compared to the lead protection using the MCNPX code

In this study, cobalt 60 with a mean energy of (1.25 Mev) was used as a photonic source to investigate the effect of decreasing gamma-ray intensity by materials and polymer composite using MCNPX code. First, we investigated the effect of thickness and density on the reduction of gamma ray intensity, and then the comparison between the lead protector, tungsten and polymer composite in several th...
